We’ve heard about the reported shortages of sulfur in soils due to cleaner air standards and that plants desire this important secondary nutrient, but when should additional sulfur be added to a nutrient management program? The North Central Research Station looked at various timing, sources and applications of sulfur products:
This experiment shows the value of adding that sulfur at planting time with a small rate of nitrogen on each side of the row. Cooler northern soils during the early season may limit mineralization of sulfur from the soil. So, an excellent time to apply sulfur can be at planting so the nutrient will be available when the crop needs it.
The benefit from sulfur applications to both corn and soybeans was evident this past year (photo to the right shows a sulfur deficient corn plant).
This is one nutrient that every grower should be considering in his nutrient management plan.
